Once you've done steps 1-5 for every candidate vendor, you'll almost always find the cheapest initial price is not the cheapest total cost. That's fine. Pick the one with the lowest true cost. But don't just stop there – I keep a quarterly review of any part where we chose a non-premium option. Track actual failure rates, install times, and compare to projections. Adjust your next order accordingly.
For example, we buy hella LED headlights almost exclusively now because despite a 15% unit price premium, the failure rate is near zero. For raider fuel filters, we stick with the OEM equivalent because the job is too critical. But for non-critical parts, I still occasionally test a new supplier – with a tight QC check on first order.
