If you're going to read one paragraph, read this one: when a car or mower is already apart, the exact-fit part is the cheapest part you can buy. That isn't marketing copy. If someone replaced the engine at some point, the code matters even more. When a customer asks for a filter by mower model only, I stop and ask for that code before ordering.

It's tempting to think that if an oil filter spins onto the threads, it's good enough. But a spin-on filter has an internal bypass valve and often an anti-drainback valve, and those specifications are part of the part. A filter calibrated for a car engine can thread onto a small engine and still be wrong for its oil flow. In the last 18 months, our checklist caught 14 wrong filters before they left the counter, most of them cross-references that would have physically fit.

What does locking the rear differential do? (And when not to use it)

Short answer: locking the rear differential makes both rear wheels rotate at the same speed. In an open differential, power takes the path of least resistance. If one wheel is on ice, mud or loose gravel, it spins and the other wheel sits there doing nothing. A locked differential keeps both wheels turning together, so the wheel with grip still has to turn and can pull the vehicle forward. It doesn't add traction; it makes better use of the traction you have.

Use it at low speed on loose or uneven surfaces—rock, mud, sand, snow-covered trails. Don't use it on dry pavement. During a turn, the outside rear wheel travels farther than the inside one. With the differential locked, both wheels are forced to turn at the same speed, so something has to give: the tires skip, the driveline winds up, and parts can break.

I once left a rear locker engaged after a muddy pull and drove onto pavement. The first sharp turn produced a loud clunk from the back of the truck, and I was sure I had broken an axle. I hadn't; the locker was still on. It's a memorable way to learn the difference between a differential that is working and one that is locked.

When I'll still buy the cheaper part

I don't want this article to sound like the only safe choice is OE parts with a premium markup. If there's no deadline, the vehicle isn't disabled, and I can verify dimensions and connector type before I promise a completion time, I'll take a reasonable gamble on a less expensive part. The problem is when people make that gamble on a job that's already scheduled.

So here's my final rule: if the car is on a lift, the mower is in pieces, or the inspection deadline is Thursday, the exact verified part is the deal. The few extra dollars are buying certainty, and certainty is what gets the job done once.
