There's no single answer to 'what part is this?' It depends on the evidence in front of you. The lesson that sticks: most rush failures are identification failures, not manufacturing failures.

If you can't measure it, at least look for the casting number on the end of the cam. That number often separates a standard profile from a performance profile. To be fair, sometimes it is the same. But the cost of being wrong is too high to rely on 'should be.' A photo, a stamping, or a measuring tape closes the loop. If a customer insists, don't lecture. Give them a simple way to prove it: send a photo of every number they can find. If the number is missing, measure the part.

Physical part beats diagrams. Diagrams beat descriptions. On a deadline, start with the most concrete evidence you have.

  • If you can touch the old part, go with situation one: measure it and read the labels.
  • If you have a part number, VIN, or dimensional diagram, go with situation two: verify before you submit an order.
  • If you're working from someone else's memory, go with situation three: slow down, educate, and get one concrete piece of evidence.

One last thing: I was a phone call away from ordering the wrong set of Hella E36 headlights because the customer said 'it's the same as 1996.' A photo of the lens stamping stopped me. So glad I asked for it. That photo saved a weekend and a hundred miles of unnecessary freight. Now asking for photos is non-negotiable in my shop.
